By JOSFYN UBA

In the vibrant tapestry of Nigerian entertainment history, few figures have left a mark as indelible as Sam Osamede. Many of us recall with nostalgia the popular TV show styled, Hotel De Jordan where starred as Chief Ajas.

Chief Ajas died on 21st Oct 2025 Tuesday afternoon, circa 1:00 pm, and was buried in his compound same day @ 11:00 pm.

Born in 1938 to Late Chief Martins Osamede of the Irivboje family unit of Afuze-Emai, Sam rose to fame in the early 1980s as an iconic actor in a beloved sitcom, Hotel De Jordan that not only entertained audiences but also resonated deeply with the cultural fabric of the nation.

His performances were characterized by a unique blend ofhumor, authenticity, and relatability, qualities that made him a household name and a cherished figure in the hearts of many.

A Renowned Educationist

Chief Sam Osamede was a teacher and headed many secondary schools as Principal before his elevation to Chief Inspector of Education in the then Midwest/Bendel State.

While his acting career flourished, he also had a significant impact as an educator. Possessing a deep passion for knowledge and a desire to uplift others, he dedicated a considerable part of his life to teaching.

His classrooms were not just places of learning; they were sanctuaries of creativity, where he inspired young minds to think critically and embrace their potential. Chief Osamedebelieved that education was the cornerstone of progress, and he tirelessly advocated for the importance of academic excellence, often encouraging his students to pursue their passions fearlessly.

Long after his demise, Chief Sam Osamede’s impact in the old Bendel State will still be felt with an inspiring legacy.

Chief Ajas-Man of Wit and Humour

Sam Osamede’s foray into acting came at a time when Nigerian television was beginning to carve out its identity. He was cast in Hotel De Jordan, a TV series that succinctly mirrored society.  The title, Hotel De Jordan belonged to an extremely popular television slot started precisely in 1973 at the then Midwest Television (MTV) which later became Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) following the takeover of all television stations nation-wide by the then Federal government.

It was a concept developed by a renowned creative mind, Joseph Ihonde who was the creator/producer of the slot with a theme unveiling the class struggle of the rich, the poor, the opportunist click of cabal that is still sucking the nation.

Chief Sam Osamede starred as the stupendously rich but illiterate bullish Chief Ajas alongside Lord Mayor (Musa Yusufu); Idemudia (Agbonifo Enaruna) Bob Allan and Last Eguavon and others

His role in the sitcom not only showcased his extraordinary talent but also highlighted societal issues with a comedic touch that engaged and educated viewers.

The humor he brought to the screen transcended mere entertainment; it sparked conversations in living rooms across the country, bridging generational gaps through laughter. And Sam Osamede (Chief Ajas) became a symbol of the entertainment landscape of his time on National Television, captivating audiences with his charm and wit.

A Loving Family Man

Beyond the screen, Chief Sam Osamede was a devoted family man. To those who knew him personally, he was a source of strength, guidance, and unconditional love. He was dedicated not just to his craft but to nurturing and raising his family. His commitment to his loved ones was evident in the way he balanced his career with family life, often drawing inspiration from his home for his art. He instilled values of respect, compassion, and perseverance in his children, becoming not just a father but a beacon of wisdom and integrity.

A family friend

He became our family friend in the mid 80’s when he came on transfer to Agbor as the Chief Inspector of Education for the then Ika Local Government Area. His relationship with my family actually took its root through late Dr. Gibson Nwomu, Medical Director, Nwomu Clinic, Agbor. My elder sister was a staff nurse at the hospital.

Although, we lost contact with him for a long time but got reconnected a few years ago, through another respected theatre veteran family friend, Uncle Las Eguavon, who also co-starred with Chief Sam Osamede (ChIef Ajas)  in Hotel De Jordan. Since then, we have maintained regular contact with our own dear Chief Ajas. He was always happy to hear from my sister and I.

Upon hearing our voice, he would say, “Oh, you have made my day. Let me hear from you soon” The last time I spoke with him, the old man’s voice was unusually very faint. I didn’t know that he was already preparing for a performance with the ancestors.

A Legacy of Inspiration

Sam Osamede’s influence extends far beyond his accomplishments as an actor and educator. He was a community leader, a mentor, and a friend to many. His laughter continued to resonate long after his appearances on screen, a testament to the joy he brought to those around him. The old man’s life exemplified the belief that success is not just measured by fame or fortune but by the positive impact one has on others.

As we reflect on the life and times of Sam Osamede, we celebrate a man who embodied wit, creativity, and deep familial love. His legacy lives on, not only in the annals of Nigerian entertainment but also in the hearts of those he touched through his advocacy for education and family values. Though he is no longer with us, his spirit continues to inspire generations, reminding us all of the power of laughter, education, and unwavering love.
