Lauretta Onochie:  Senate rejects her as INEC Commissioner

Date:

The Senate has rejected the confirmation of Lauretta Onochie as a National Commissioner of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Chairman of the committee, Sen. Kabiru Gaya, in his report, on Tuesday, said Onochie did not satisfy the provisions of the Federal Character Principles.

The committee also said her nomination contravenes federal character principles as contained in Section 14 (3) of the 1999 Constitution.

Accordingly to the committee, there is currently a serving commissioner of INEC from Delta State, where Ms Onochie came from.
