Lagos: Rotary Club of Lekki Phase 1 donates textbooks to library, gives exercise books to pupils and holds reading session

Date:

It was a bee-hive of activities, recently, at the Itedo Community School, Itedo, a suburb of Lekki in Eti-Osa local government area of Lagos when the Rotary Club of Lekki Phase 1, donated dictionaries to the libr5 and exercise books worth millions of naira to the pupils

Highlighting the reasons for their gesture during the presentations, the President of the club, Rotn Yetunde Dimowo stated that Rotary has seven areas of participation of which basic education and literacy are part of.  She noted that the club is often encouraged to adopt a school, in which case Itedo Community School became their adopted school.

The donation was also part of its efforts to give back to the community, encourage and help the pupils because of the present economic hardship in the country since Covid 19 has left most families handicapped such that many children have been out of school while others who even manage to attend classes do not have books.

Dimowo added that the community is poor and some parents may not be able to provide exercise books for their children, which will hinder them from concentrating on their studies. “We were able to identify schools in our environment and we look for what we felt they will need when they are going back to school.

This time around, we are giving out exercise books to students. We have carried out a survey and realised that at some point, there are students that go to school whose parents cannot afford one or two exercise books and since the idea of rotary is to give back, we want to ensure that those students who don’t have material to work with, get the books.

“We donated the exercise books to the pupils directed while the dictionaries were donated to the library.

In the same vein, some members who visited the school alongside President Dimowo took turns to teach in different classes. It was also nostalgic for them as they interacted with the pupils. They advised the pupils to make use of every opportunity to become something better in future and put in a lot of efforts to get to their destination.

“We are teaching them so that when they grow up, they will be willing to give to others and realise that it is only through the act of giving that can help our environment.
They should also be focused in what they are doing and know that there are people who don’t have, so when they grow up, they can add value to the society rather than hinder the economy,” Dimowo stressed.

“For me, I have enjoyed this teaching session, I would like to come back and do this again and again “
