Christmas spirit: Delta community starts N25million Corps’ Lodge project, pays tribute to deceased heroes

The vibrant community of Onicha Uku in Aniocha North local government area, Delta state marked a memorable Christmas celebration with the maiden edition of the Onicha-Uku Youth Carnival and the Launching of a ₦25 million project dedicated to the Six-Room Corps Members’ Lodge
The event, held in the spirit of unity and communal progress, brought together indigenes and visitors alike, seamlessly blending development and rich cultural heritage.

On Dec 28, 2025 precisely, the Kanidinma primary school compound, venue of the event was transformed into a festive hub, adorned with colorful decorations and bustling with excitement. As families gathered to celebrate the season, the traditional ruler of Onicha Uku kingdom, His Royal Highness, Obi Raphael Agbamuche 11, led dignitaries, community leaders, sons and daughters of Onicha Uku to the launching ceremony of an ambitious project aimed at providing better accommodation and facilities for the Corps members serving in the community.
Organizers say the initiative is a testament to the community’s appreciation for the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) and their contributions to local development.

In his welcome address, Comrade Emmanuel Chekwube Mukolu
Chairman, Planning Committee said that the Onicha-Uku Youth Carnival transcends festivity, but represents a collective awakening of vision, unity, and purposeful engagement, especially among the youths. “The carnival was conceived not merely for celebration, but as a platform to inspire our young people, strengthen communal bonds, and reaffirm our shared cultural heritage”

Speaking on the ₦25 million project, dedicated to the Six-Room Corps Members’ Lodge
Mukolu noted that the project stands as a symbol of foresight, hospitality, and commitment to national service. “It reflects our readiness to support development, partnership, and human dignity, while projecting Onicha-Uku as a welcoming and progressive community”
He reiterated that building a stronger and more united Onicha-Uku requires the active participation of all—elders and youths, men and women, both home and in the diaspora noting that only through unity of purpose and shared responsibility can the people achieve inclusive and sustainable progress.

During the ceremony, cultural groups from various quarters of the town showcased their traditional dances and songs captivating the audience adding a unique element to the day. Each group wore distinctive attire representing their lineage, narrating stories through mesmerizing performances that echoed the rich history and unity of the people. From rhythmic drumming to elegant masquerade displays, the cultural presentations underscored the harmonious coexistence of progress and tradition.

A major highlight of the day was the presentation of awards to deserving sons and daughters who have distinguished themselves in their service to the community.
Also honoured posthumously, were some departed heroes whose sacrifices have continued to shape the community. “Their legacies remind us that true greatness lies in lasting impact, not in the length of years” Comrade Mukolu said.
The spirit of goodwill, cultural pride, and communal development remained palpable all through the ceremony. The Christmas celebration in Onicha Uku was not just a festive occasion but a powerful reminder of what can be achieved when a community comes together with a shared vision for the future.
